Personality: For the most part she'll keep to herself, honing her magic and practicing the Mind Window spell that she still hasn't come close to touching. Through careful observation, she's become wise beyond her years and highly impresses people when she first speaks. However, if you're on a ship with her this could take weeks, as she doesn't speak unless spoken to generally, and usually she speaks in Cherokee anyway. It takes a bit for her to open up to you, and what seems like forever if you're a Tassanta or "fair skinned" person. Because of what happened at Opecanough's Massacre, she's very distrusting of whites. When she does finally consider you a friend, she's quite the conversationalist and you'll see the 22 year old in her start to emerge. In battle, she's ruthless with her magic if the fight involves the British Fleet, but that doesn't mean she's fond of pirates either. In her eyes, no white man should really be trusted.
History: Born of a Cherokee Chief and an English noblewoman, Indianna or "Indy" as affectionately referred to, is definitely not the steriotypical "Carrie girl with powers and no friends because she's a freak." Her father advised her to keep her magic secret, and thus she had many friends in their Cherokee village. Her mother was quickly accepted into the tribe despite her English heritage, and was moved to create peace between the Indians and the white folk.
Indy's first encounter with whites was when her father went to Jamestown to investigate the villagers. They stayed in the Powhatan tribe for a few years, learning the English customs. As a gift to Indy, the Cherokee princess, the whites gave her "a bird with which to deliver mail." Well, since Indy had not the slightest inkling of what "mail" was (c'mon, she was only 10 and the Indians don't exactly have a post office) she kept the lovely Gyrfalcon as a pet, naming it Unole Atsilv: Cherokee for "Sky Fire"
All was not well in the land of the Cherokee, Powhatan and Jamestown residents. After a few years of peaceful living, the English settlers from the north invaded the settlements and murdered Powhatan. This was when Indy was 18, just of age in the English world. A few weeks later, with Powhatan's brother Opecanough in charge, Opecanough launched an unexpected massacre on the settlers of Jamestowne. Both he and Indianna's father were murdered, while Indy and Unole were taken aboard a British vessel headed back to the British Isles. She doesn't know what happened to her mother.
Other: Her powers are limited, but growing every day. At present she is able to predict what ships are coming from which directions using the "voices" in the wind. She can also tell weather patterns, and influence them to some extent. This comes in handy aboard ships, so they can prepare to raid a merchant vessel coming toward them, or defend against an attacking ship. When the ships are about to collide, Indianna has often been known to perform some sort of "rain dance" as taught to her by the Cherokee medicine man, who was her mentor. The magic she is most intent on learning is how to directly gain access to Davy Jones' locker, and to use the Mind Window, which uses people's auras to predict their feelings and emotions.
Roleplay Sample:
"Osdv Ayelv nudvhnadegv Nulinigvgv"
Indy was in a dark room by herself, poring over her endless scrolls of handwritten Cherokee symbols as usual. Anyone else who looked over her shoulder (if they were not soundly attacked) would think that it was a bunch of scribbles on a page. Ignorant white man. She pushed the current scroll away and pulled a new one toward her, reaching upward to grab a strange fruit from a hanging basket above her head.
"Adanedi Tsgvwalodi Udatanv agisdi"
She cracked the fruit's hard shell and poured the contents into a clay bowl on the table, mixing it with a pestle and adding some powdered green leaves. Once she had surveyed the concoction intently for a few minutes, her eyes snapped up from the bowl to the door of her small room. Unole shuffled uneasily on his perch.
"You may enter."
A man outside who had raised his hand to knock on the door of her room froze for a moment, surprised, then continued inside. His face held an inquiry that Indy had already known about, without magic.
"Yes, I've just finished it. If you mix this into the ship's next meal it should give your energy a slight push and improve health and morale.
"Thank you Miss Staravia." the man said, shrinking away from her eagle-like eyes.
When he had left with the clay bowl, Indy summoned Unole off his perch and stroked his plumage with a faint smile. He affectionately nipped her finger and let out a quiet chirp.
"You know what bothers me the most about them?" she asked him, gesturing her head at the door that the man had just retreated through. "They never return the damn bowl."
Unole ruffled his feathers and clicked with some sort of agreeal, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. As if struck by an idea, Indy stood up at her table and adjusted her outfit. She always wore her traditional Cherokee clothes during spells and incantations.
"I'm sorry my friend, I forgot that you haven't eaten today." she apologized, thrusting open a window over the sea and letting the curtains flutter outward. "Go and catch some dinner."
She released him out the frame and watched him disappear over the ocean screeching with glee. As he wheeled and pivoted in the air, Indy smiled and pulled the curtain in the window.
"You could be right, you know. He might actually bring back my bowl."
