I'm not going to lie. I'm a HUGE Geoffrey Rush fan. Honestly, if he and Kevin Spacey were ever in a movie together I might JUST die. It would be too much.
That being said, I haven't seen many of his movies, and I was wondering, if there are other Rush fans out there, what I should see next?
I have seen:
Pirates of the Caribbean: Uh. Duh.
Elizabeth: Unfortunately, I did not have my sound up when this was on. I was sitting in my dorm, listening to music, and the channel I had been watching started playing this movie. I stayed around because I saw Cate Blanchett on the opening credits. Then Geoffrey Rush's name came up and, you know... I couldn't turn over. They both -looked- brilliant, but without sound I hardly knew what was going on. I saw Geoffrey lurking in the shadows a lot, which was cool.
The Banger Sisters: If you want to see Geoffrey Rush do something insanely adorable and funny, check this movie out. It is so great, I almost peed myself. I love his character SO much. I can't wait to become a crazy writer! More on that later.
Quills: Sexiest. Movie. Ever. I mean it. It's almost too sexy, if you know what I mean. Considering some of you are probably not... 'of age', I'm not going to recommend this movie. Then, if you do happen to see it, I can't be blamed by your parents for it. Clean conscience!
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers: Possibly my favorite Rush movie to date, I rented this movie when I rented Quills (though I had seen Quills before) and I was blown away that it was actually -better- than my previous favorite Rush film. It was amazing. I call it 'Geoffrey Rush's Beyond the Sea'. Beyond the Sea is a Kevin Spacey movie... they're both based on true lives (Rush: Peter Sellers, Spacey: Bobby Darin) and they are both masterful. Of course I have big issues with both movies, but that's just what makes them BETTER.
Swimming Up Stream: Rush plays an abusive, drunken father. He's brilliant, as always. If you want to listen to Rush speak, without any accents or vocal affects, this is the film for you. I can pretty much just -listen- to it. His character is brilliantly broken and troubled, and his chemistry with the family he abuses is incredible. It's a potent film, and has one of the best character motivations I've ever seen. Oh, and Jesse Spencer from House MD spends most of the movie in a speedo. Not bad.
Intolerable Cruelty: I don't remember the movie. I just remember his bit. It's... funny.
Ned Kelly: Hello, movie that TOTALLY lied to me. From the back of the box I imagined he would be in it a lot more than he was, with a lot more... ruthlessness to him. But in fact, I found him compassionate and, as always, brilliant... and really not on screen enough. He does get injured in this movie which, because I'm a TERRIBLE person, really does it for me. It's a slow plot, though, so unless you like your historical fiction I'm not entirely sure this one is for you. Orlando Bloom is in it, but really, he doesn't add anything to it but a really creepy moment.
Finding Nemo: "Get in my mouth... if you want to live..."
The Tailor of Panama: Granted, I saw this movie some time ago, but from what I can remember it was DAMN entertaining. I loved it, because Rush plays a character that can't NOT lie, and it gets him in a whole heap of trouble. Being somewhat of a story teller myself, it was really interesting to see what can happen if you let the thrill of telling a story get the better of you. Even though it couldn't really happen.
House on Haunted Hill: What a terrible movie! But Geoffrey is in it, and it was on basic cable. Bam. Watched it. Taye Diggs is another selling point. I'm not a fan of horror movies... but this hardly counted as one. Not so much scary as it was hilarious, watching Rush and Diggs run around for their lives was definitely worth the time invested in getting through the terrible plot. Hahah.
Shakespeare in Love: Honestly, I watched this because it had 'Shakespeare' in the title. It was pretty cute! Geoffrey is adorable as the comedic relief. But unless you like painfully romantic movies, or can catch a bunch of Shakespeare jokes, this probably isn't for you.
Les Miserables: For me, there is no other 'non-musical' Javert than Geoffrey Rush (the musical title going to the Australian singer Philip Quast). He's incredible, and deep, and there's so much pain inside him it's torturous. I love this movie. I own it. And talk about a cast! Liam Neeson as Val Jean, Uma Thurman as Fantine! Claire Danes is in there as Cosette. It's... pretty great. But I'm a huge musical nerd, and thus I love books and movies of said musicals. Great, great stuff.
Shine: I watched this too long ago to remember anything about it beyond that Rush is AMAZING.
Okay, so... any movies out there that I haven't seen? Or, you know, that I have seen and you want to talk about? Hahaha.
